04 / Short-Term Insurance

Keep your cover close to real life.

Your home, vehicle and possessions change over time. Their insurance should reflect what you own, how you use it and what it would cost to replace.

The planning question

Why short-term insurance planning matters

A low premium does not tell you whether the cover fits. Replacement values, excesses, limits, security requirements and exclusions deserve equal attention.

What Sentinel assesses

  • Vehicles, property and replacement values
  • Use of assets and changes in circumstances
  • Contents and possessions taken outside the home
  • Existing excesses, limits and exclusions
  • Liability exposure and insurer requirements

A structured review

The areas we consider.

01

Motor

Review vehicle use, insured value, cover level, drivers and excesses. Compare the actual policy scope rather than relying on a headline label.

02

Buildings

Consider the structure and permanent fixtures, rebuilding requirements and policy conditions. Market price and rebuilding cost are different measures.

03

Household contents

Review the belongings inside your home and the replacement values that support a suitable sum insured.

04

Portable possessions

Check how specified items are covered outside the home, including geographic limits, security requirements and excesses.

05

Liability & asset protection

Identify liability exposures and gaps between sections. Commercial enquiries require confirmation of the relevant product and advice arrangement before a quotation.

An Old Mutual AFD

Sentinel is your adviser relationship.

Our Old Mutual AFD relationship provides the institutional and product environment in which we work. Your adviser explains the relevant options, provider, terms and costs before you decide.

Sentinel is not the insurer. The quotation and policy identify the insurer responsible for the risk, and cover remains subject to its acceptance and terms.

A little more clarity

Your questions, answered.

01What does comprehensive vehicle insurance cover?

It commonly combines damage to the insured vehicle with specified theft and third-party risks. Exact benefits, exclusions, excesses and territorial limits are determined by the policy. “Comprehensive” does not mean every event is covered.

02What is household contents insurance?

It covers specified risks affecting belongings in your home under the policy terms. The sum insured should reflect appropriate replacement values, rather than only what you originally paid.

03What is buildings insurance?

It addresses specified risks to the building and permanent fixtures. What is included, required maintenance and exclusions must be checked in the policy wording.

04What are portable possessions?

These are items you take away from home, such as a phone, laptop or jewellery. They may need a specific section or individual listing; contents cover does not automatically cover every item everywhere.

05How often should I review my short-term insurance?

Review at renewal and after changes such as a move, new vehicle, renovations or valuable purchases. Tell the insurer about material changes when required by the policy.

06What is an insurance excess?

It is the portion of a claim you may have to pay under the policy. There may be basic and additional excesses depending on the event, driver, asset or circumstances.

07What happens if my contents are underinsured?

The insurer may reduce a claim according to the policy’s underinsurance provisions. Review replacement values and how the relevant conditions apply to your cover.

08Is Sentinel the insurer?

No. Sentinel provides the adviser relationship. The insurer underwrites the risk and considers claims under the contract. Your quotation and policy documents must identify the insurer and the applicable intermediary arrangement.
